I love the way that Stockett showcases the interplay between white and black citizens of Jackson, Mississippi during the early 60s. This time I read the book and, while I enjoyed it, the audio was definitely better. I listened to the audio of this book back in 2009 and really enjoyed it. The idea is to write the book without using real names, because the potential risk will hurt the women participating. She asks Aibileen to help her by telling her story and finding other black maids who will do the same. While visiting her friends, Skeeter comes up with a plan to interview "the help" and write a book about their experiences working for white families. It tells the story of three women: twenty-two-year-old Skeeter Plelan has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss Aibileen Clark, a black maid raising her seventeenth white baby and Minny Jackson, Aibileen’s best friend whose big mouth and anger over unjust situations causes her to lose her job quite often. There are probably very few people who enjoy reading who haven't already read The Help.
